If you’re looking to live and work in Mauritius, an Occupation Permit (OP) offers the ideal gateway. This special permit combines both residency and work authorisation, enabling skilled professionals, entrepreneurs, and retirees to establish themselves on the island under clearly defined categories. Whether you’re investing, launching your own consultancy, joining a Mauritian company, or simply retiring in the tropics, there’s a tailored path for you.
Mauritius continues to position itself as a prime destination for global talent and capital. Thanks to its attractive lifestyle, stable economy, and investor-friendly laws, the country offers an efficient route for non-citizens to obtain legal residence and employment rights. The government, through the Economic Development Board (EDB), has streamlined the Occupation Permits process to make relocation seamless and compliant.
The Occupation Permit in Mauritius is a combined residency and work permit available to foreign nationals under three main categories:
Investor Occupation Permit
This category is designed for business-minded individuals and entrepreneurs who wish to set up or invest in a Mauritian company.
To be eligible, the applicant must be both a shareholder and a director of a company incorporated in Mauritius. The company must be formed under the Companies Act 2001. The permit is intended to encourage economic contribution through foreign investment and job creation.
There are two ways to qualify:
Firstly, the applicant can transfer an initial amount of USD 50,000 or the equivalent in freely convertible foreign currency into the bank account of the business.
Alternatively, if the business already exists or has been inherited, it must hold a net asset value of at least USD 50,000, with a cumulative turnover of at least MUR 12 million over the three years leading up to the application.
For renewals, the company must show a consistent revenue stream, generating a minimum gross income of MUR 4 million per year, starting from the third year.
The permit is renewable for a further 10-year period as long as the established criteria are met.
This permit is suitable for foreign nationals who have secured employment with a company based in Mauritius.
To qualify, the individual must have a valid contract of employment with a Mauritian-based entity or a multinational. The basic monthly salary must be no less than MUR 22,500.
In some cases, applicants may choose to apply for a short-term OP, valid for up to nine months. This can be extended once for an additional three months, offering flexibility for short-term projects or assignments.
Professionals holding an OP are also allowed to invest in other local businesses. However, they may not manage or receive any form of employment income from these ventures. They can also hold minority shares in the business that employs them, provided they are not the majority shareholder.
The employer must be the one to initiate the application process, submitting all necessary documentation. They must also attend the appointment with the applicant at the EDB.
Designed for solo professionals in the services sector, the Self-Employed OP is best suited for individuals operating independently, such as consultants, architects, IT specialists, or legal advisors.
Applicants must register with the Registrar of Businesses under the Business Registration Act and must conduct their activities as a one-person operation. No additional staff may be employed under this category.
An initial transfer of USD 35,000 (or equivalent) must be made into a local bank account in Mauritius. This serves as proof of financial commitment to the business.
The OP is valid for 10 years and renewable. To renew the permit, the business must generate an income of at least MUR 800,000 annually, starting from the third year of registration.
Mauritius welcomes foreign students to contribute to its workforce after graduation. The Young Professional OP is a dedicated permit for graduates of recognised institutions in Mauritius.
Eligible applicants must have completed at least an undergraduate degree or an internationally recognised professional certification equivalent to a degree. The qualification must be obtained from a registered institution in Mauritius.
This permit allows the holder to work for a maximum of three years, depending on the duration of their employment contract. It’s a great pathway for international graduates seeking global work experience.
Mauritius is also an ideal retirement destination. Non-citizens aged 50 years or older can apply for a Retired Non-Citizen Residence Permit.
To qualify, the applicant must transfer an initial amount of at least USD 1,500 into a Mauritian bank account. Thereafter, the retiree must continue to transfer at least USD 1,500 per month or USD 18,000 per year.
This residence permit is valid for ten years and is renewable. After three consecutive years of compliance, retirees may apply for a 20-year Permanent Residence Permit.
Retirees can invest in local businesses, provided they are not employed, managing the business, or receiving a salary. They may also purchase residential property in approved schemes and apply for residence for themselves and their spouses.
Holders of Occupation and Residence Permits may apply for a 20-year Permanent Residence Permit, provided certain financial thresholds are met over three consecutive years.
✅ Investors must earn an annual gross income of MUR 15 million or accumulate MUR 45 million in turnover.
✅ Professionals must have a consistent monthly salary of at least MUR 150,000.
✅ Self-employed individuals must show a business income of MUR 3 million per year for 3 consecutive years, immediately preceding the Permanent residency application.
✅ Retirees must transfer at least USD 54,000 or its equivalent in freely convertible foreign currency during the 3 years preceding the Permanent residency application.
The 20-year PRP can be renewed for another 20 years, provided the residency requirements have been met.
Additionally, an investor who commits USD 375,000 into a qualifying sector such as finance, green energy, or IT becomes eligible immediately.
The Premium Travel Visa is ideal for digital nomads, long-term tourists, or remote professionals who wish to experience Mauritius before committing permanently.
The visa is valid for one year and is renewable. To qualify, applicants must:
✅ Prove their income is derived from outside Mauritius and confirm they will not enter the local labour market.
✅ Show evidence of accommodation, a purpose for the extended stay, and valid travel and health insurance.
